English Version
Before any intimate interaction begins, having a real conversation first is far safer than figuring things out in the moment. Negotiation isn’t a mood-killer — it’s the first step in building trust and drawing clear boundaries.
Why Negotiation Comes First
Negotiation gives both people a shared understanding of what will and won’t happen. It turns vague expectations into clear agreements, cutting down on misunderstanding and harm from the start, and reminds everyone they can stop at any time.
What to Talk About
- Desires and expectations: what each person does and doesn’t want to try.
- Body and health: injuries, conditions, medication, allergies to be mindful of.
- Emotional triggers: words or situations to avoid.
- Time, place, and aftercare: including how you’ll care for each other afterward.
Hard Limits vs. Soft Limits
Hard limits are absolute red lines — never crossed under any circumstances. Soft limits are “maybe, but with caution” areas, approached only gradually and with full communication. Writing them down and stating them plainly is a basic form of mutual respect.
Safewords and Signals
Agree on a clear safeword (many use red/yellow/green: green = go, yellow = slow down, red = stop now). If someone can’t speak, agree on a hand signal too. Once a safeword is spoken, everything stops immediately and unconditionally — this principle is non-negotiable.
Debrief Afterward
Spend a few minutes afterward talking about what felt good and what to adjust. An honest debrief makes the next time safer and more attuned, and lets trust grow.
Final Thought
Negotiation isn’t a one-time contract — it’s an ongoing conversation. Needs change and boundaries change; staying in dialogue is the foundation of a lasting, healthy relationship.
